About

The School of Brickology - Masonry Support Systems is a self-paced, free program designed to provide bricklayers, site managers, and construction professionals with a comprehensive understanding of modern masonry support solutions. This course explores the evolution from traditional support methods to advanced systems, highlighting the reasons for their use in contemporary construction and the requirements set by NHBC, LABC, and British Standards. Participants will learn about various system types and components, including shelf angle systems, bracket supports, continuous and adjustable supports, thermal break components, and the role of fixings and anchors from leading manufacturers such as Ancon, Halfen, IG, Keystone, Fischer, and Hilti. The program covers movement considerations, installation principles, setting out, fixing support channels, using thermal break pads, and ensuring correct tolerances and load paths. Special attention is given to the interface between support systems and masonry, including integration with insulation, fire barriers, cavity wall ties, drainage, and weep holes. Learners will also compare brick slip systems with traditional brickwork. Inspection and compliance modules guide participants through checklists, NHBC and LABC requirements, BS EN 845-1, Eurocode references, and quality assurance protocols. Case studies and industry insights feature real-world applications of shelf angle systems in high-rise buildings, IG supports in façades, and manufacturer demonstrations. The course concludes with quizzes, a Support System Specialist badge, and a certificate of completion, ensuring participants are equipped to specify, install, and inspect masonry support systems to the highest standards.
