About

School of Brickology - Secondary School is a self-paced, free program designed for learners ready to advance to intermediate bricklaying skills. This course focuses on the construction and detailing of cavity walls, the correct installation of damp proofing, and the creation of structural openings for windows and doors. Participants will gain a thorough understanding of cavity wall basics, including the importance of cavities, types and installation of wall ties, insulation, and compliance with NHBC and LABC standards. The program covers essential damp proofing techniques, such as the correct use and installation of damp proof courses (DPC) and cavity trays, with guidance on meeting NHBC requirements. Learners will explore the process of setting out and building openings, installing steel and concrete lintels, and supporting brickwork over openings, while understanding common inspection failures and standards. Movement and expansion joints are introduced, with a focus on their necessity, placement, and compliance with NHBC and British Standards. Decorative techniques for openings, including soldier courses, flat and segmental arches, and decorative panels, are also covered. Practical projects guide participants through building cavity walls, corners, and openings for windows and doors. The course emphasizes professionalism and standards, including BS 5628, Eurocode 6, British Standard tolerances, NHBC checklists, and preparation for LABC inspections. Health and safety for openings is reinforced throughout. The program concludes with a recap of common intermediate mistakes, multiple quizzes, the opportunity to earn the Wall Raiser badge, a practical test, and guidance for progression to the next level.
