School of Brickology - Nursery is the next step for aspiring bricklayers who have completed the Pre School program or have a basic understanding of bricklaying fundamentals. This self-paced course is designed to build on foundational skills and introduce learners to the essential techniques required for setting out, constructing small walls, and mastering brick bonds. Participants will gain hands-on experience with tools such as the gauge rod, line & pins, and learn how to check plumb and level for accurate construction. The program covers the process of laying the first courses of bricks, building corners and piers, and understanding the importance of brick bonds, including stretcher, header, English, and Flemish bonds. Learners will also explore various mortar joints and practice creating bucket handle, flush, and weather struck joints. Through a series of practical projects, participants will construct garden walls, piers, and feature walls, applying their skills in real-world scenarios. Emphasis is placed on industry standards and safety, with guidance on NHBC and LABC requirements for small walls, British Standard tolerances, and a comprehensive health and safety recap. The course concludes with a review of common beginner errors, tool care and maintenance, mini quizzes on key topics, and the opportunity to unlock the Brickology Beginner badge. By the end of this program, learners will have the confidence and competence to tackle more advanced bricklaying projects and continue their journey in the trade.
